CURRENTS NEW MEDIA INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The CURRENTS festival is a more than just an annual event. CURRENTS is a community made up of our dedicated staff, our treasured interns, the fantastic local artists, our install crew, our network of volunteers, our partner venues that host events during the festival, and all the artists who fly out from all over the world to participate in our festival every year.

For questions about the program contact education/outreach coordinator,
Alison Nitkiewicz: alison@currentsnewmedia.org
The next internship program lasts from May 31st – June 30th 2020.

What we offer:
  • Housing for the duration of the festival in our shared intern house
  • A stipend of $750 to help with travel and meals
  • College credit when pre-arranged with university and student
  • Letter of recommendation from us (if requested)
  • Lunch every day of install and deinstall of the festival (June 2nd-11th, and June 22-26th)
  • A wonderful community of artists from around the world, our and staff and interns
  • Experience and technical knowledge/training
What we expect from our interns:
  • Stay in Santa Fe for the entire month of June. Any proposed exceptions to this must be discussed beforehand.
  • Hard work! Running a festival of this size is a LOT of work.  We expect our interns to be ready to dig in on those long days of installation (sometimes up to 12 hours.)
  • A willingness to share your individual talents while working as a team member. In the past, our interns have come from a variety of disciplines– we’ve had musicians, actors, tech-heads, performance artists, visual artists, folks interested in event coordination, festivals, construction and set design, lighting design and more.
  • A thirst for info and experience
  • Experience or strong interest in some or any of the following: media art, A/V tech, programming, exhibition installation, volunteer coordinating, graphic design, light design, event planning, curation etc.

A timeline of our internship program:May 31: Arrive in Santa Fe
June 2 – 11: Install
We have a lot to do this first week and we hit the ground running. Building walls, hanging cables and projectors, organizing all the necessary equipment, painting, and carefully unpacking and installing artwork. There are 30-40 installations. During this time, artists who have installations will be there too, and interns are paired with artists to help them install their work.  Interns will also be familiarizing themselves with installations that they will be running and docenting during the duration of the festival. CURRENTS also features several “pop-up” performances during our opening weekend, and there will be rehearsals for those as needed. Interns are welcome to participate in performances if they want to!

June 12 – 14: Opening Weekend
Opening weekend is a blast. There are concerts, performances, outdoor installations, and special events all weekend and we usually get around 3,000 visitors just in this weekend. Interns during this time help with performances, with docenting and running installations and learn how to open and close the festival. There is also an artist reception and party where all the interns, staff, crew and artists are invited to celebrate the opening.

June 15 – 21: Festival is open
During this time interns help with maintenance of the festival, and may be responsible for and learn how to help with technical troubleshooting if anything in the festival goes down. Our interns are docents during this time and run installations, greet visitors, help with any questions visitors may have and are responsible for opening and closing the exhibition space everyday we are open. Our interns are expected to work half days of 4-6 hours, though occasionally in a pinch a double may be required. During these weeks, there are special events throughout town related to the festival. Interns are invited and encouraged to attend whatever events they like.

June 22 – 26: De-Install
Interns help our crew and staff  to take down, package and ship off the art that came from out of state or country and return the exhibition space to its original state.  CURRENTS hosts a wrap party during this time.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:
